Endodontic

A root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form.

By saving your tooth, an endodontist can help you keep your natural smile, so you can continue to eat your favorite foods and maintain your overall health. Nothing looks, feels or functions like your natural tooth!

What is Root Canal or Endodontic?

Endodontics treatment is also known as canal treatment. Endodontics treatment is done to save infected or rotten teeth.

In the outer enamel of the teeth, there is a cavity consisting of veins and nerves extending along its steep root in hard enamel tissue. The tissues that give vitality to the tooth are the vessels and nerves called pulp in this space. This tissue can become inflamed for different reasons or become infected by bacteria. In such cases, symptoms such as tenderness, darkening and pain may occur in the tooth.

Stages of endodontic treatment;

  • Removal of the vessels and nerves in the pulp,
  • Cleaning and disinfecting the pulp cavity,
  • Broadening of channels and
  • The filling material of the channels is filling.

In Which Conditions Is Endodontic Treatment Preferred?

Vascular and nerve tissue of the tooth may lose its vitality or become infected due to various reasons. Some of these reasons are;

  • Incompatible restorations,
  • Deep bruises,
  • Loss of nerve and vascular tissue vitality of the tooth as a result of the accident,
  • Teething, teeth grinding,
  • Periodontal (gingival and surrounding) diseases that are not treated for a long time,
  • New bruises formed around old fillings.
  • In such cases, endodontic treatment is preferred as the treatment method.

What are the symptoms of the need for endodontic treatment?

When the pulp region sees damage, this can lead to a number of effects. Pulp region is generally damaged teeth;

  • Abscess and pain,
  • Swelling on the face,
  • Swelling and tenderness in nearby gums,
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold,
  • Persistent or recurring pimple-like white blisters on the gums.
  • Blackening of the tooth color,
  • Severe toothache in case of chewing or pressure.

If your teeth have one or more of the following symptoms, be sure to see a dentist.

Canal treatment is not applied to every decaying or painful tooth. If the tooth can be treated with filler, the tooth is filled. However, if the tooth is not treated at this stage and the bacteria leap into the tooth, causing inflammation, then channel treatment is required.

What Happens During a Root Canal treatment?

A root canal requires one or more office visits and can be performed by a dentist or endodontist. An endodontist is a dentist who specializes in the causes, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and injuries of the human dental pulp or the nerve of the tooth. The choice of which type of dentist to use depends to some degree on the difficulty of the root canal procedure needed in your particular tooth and the general dentist's comfort level in working on your tooth. Your dentist will discuss who might be best suited to perform the work in your particular case.

Stages of Endodontic Treatment

Contrary to popular belief, endodotic treatment is not a painful and long-lasting treatment method.

1. Dental x-ray is taken. With this x-ray, inflammation of the root canals and the bones around it is detected.

2. Teeth are going to be  numbed with local anesthesia. If the nerve is dead, anesthesia may not be needed. However, the dentist can still anesthetize you.

3. A hole will be drilled in the tooth.

4. Pulp tissue and tissue infected with bacteria around it are going to be removed.

5. Root canal will be cleaned.

6. The cleaned channel is going to be filled with filling material.

Canal treatment can be completed in a single treatment in cases where the essence of the tooth is alive. However, in cases where the tooth loses its vitality, the number of sessions may vary depending on the condition of the tooth.

After Endodontic Treatment

There is no sensitivity to hot or cold stimuli in the tooth that is applied to the canal. Because in this treatment, pulp of the tooth, that is, its essence is taken.

If the tooth has not completely lost its vitality, a wound occurs during nerve - vascular rupture in canal treatment. Mild pain may occur during chewing until this wound heals. This pain is not excessively severe. If you have a lot of pain after treatment, you should contact your dentist.

Is Teeth Re-Inflamed After Canal Treatment?

The success rate of a well-done endodontic treatment is over 95%. Many teeth fixed with a root canal can last a lifetime.

Inflammation or pain is not expected after successful canal treatment. However, if the person does not pay attention to oral hygiene, a new caries may occur in the tooth. This creates the possibility for bacteria to leak back into the ducts. As a result, an infection may develop. If you pay attention to oral hygiene after canal treatment, you are less likely to encounter any problems.

However, you should not forget that canal treatment is a reproducible procedure. In cases where the treatment is unsuccessful, the root canals can be emptied and disinfected and then refilled.

How Do I Care My Teeth Afterwards?

Root-treated teeth should be looked after just the same as any other tooth. Remember to clean your teeth last thing at night and at least one other time during the day, with a fluoride toothpaste. Cut down on sugary foods and drinks, and have them only at mealtimes if possible. See your dental team as often as they recommend for regular check-ups.
